Though made of concrete foundations and brick walls, homes can be dynamic spaces that grow and change with you over time. If you’ve found yourself feeling cramped in your home or just needing an upgrade, it’s time to rethink how you’re using your space.
Flex that Floor Plan
Some walls, just like some rules, are made to be broken (load bearing walls notwithstanding). Creating more usable space in your home could be as simple as reshaping your floor plan. Removing a wall between the kitchen and the living room can create a large open space great for entertaining. Think outside of your home and build a wraparound porch to add outside living space.
New You, New Room
This might blow your mind, but the dining room in your home doesn’t have to be a dining room. If you eat most meals at the breakfast table, then the dining room can become an in-home gym or office. The playroom that was used daily would be better suited as a teen hangout once the kids are in high school. Each room in your home should serve you and fit your lifestyle, not the other way around.
Organize Everything
Clearing the clutter can dramatically impact how you see and use your home. Once you’ve whittled down your possessions, take time to consider how you will store items in the future. Utilizing vertical space is a great way to gain more storage. You can stack appliances on storage bin, install floor to ceiling bookshelves, or go retro with a pegboard.
I don’t think you need to fill every empty space in your home, but I do think it’s important to make sure your home is both functional and beautiful. If you’re not loving your home, it’s time to renovate.
