When clients begin to think about a home renovation project, they often spend time looking at the “After” pictures of kitchens, baths, and additions. These perfect images show you gleaming hardwood floors, pristine countertops, and elegant crown molding. What they don’t show you is how those pieces came together- the sawdust, the painter’s tape, the disruption. They also don’t show you how the renovation firm handled the project. Were they courteous and knowledgeable or aloof and sloppy? How can you find out whom you can trust? Here are five important questions that you should ask when it’s time to choose a home remodeling team.
- Are you licensed and insured?
It is so important that your contractor is licensed by the state and insured. Licensed contractors handle the permitting process and ensure that all work is done to code. This provides you recourse if any accidents or damage occur during renovation. Worker compensation insurance, builder’s risk and general liability can also protect you from any financial obligation if anything goes wrong on the jobsite.
- How many projects like yours has the remodeler done?
Some home renovation firms specialize in areas like historic preservation, while others take on projects in all areas. It’s important that you match your needs to your renovation firm. Review their online portfolios to see if the projects they are showcasing fit your style. Read their testimonials to see what clients have said about their specific projects. When you speak with the president or project manager, ask them about other projects they’ve done that are similar to yours to make sure you feel like they have the expertise you’re looking for.
- How often do you complete a project on time?
The answer you are looking for is “most of the time”. Things do come up during projects- unforeseen foundation issues or delays in supplies. While we do everything we can to keep renovations running on schedule, sometimes the best-laid plans go awry. However, despite the occasional delay, your renovator should have a great track record of finishing work in a timely manner. This shows a level of organization, planning, and attention to detail that you want in a project manager and construction team.
- How often will I be updated about the progress on my renovation?
Constant communication is the key to ensuring a stress-free renovation. Your renovation team should be available to answer questions about materials, design, progress, and budget at any time. You should also receive at least weekly updates about the project.
- Can I speak to some of your past clients?
Any reputable firm will have a list of past clients with which you can speak. Take the opportunity to speak with them seriously. Ask questions about communication frequency, personality, skill, and overall impression. If any of their answers leave you wondering about something else, ask follow up questions until you get the information you need.
Bonus question:
What percentage of the remodeler’s work is repeat or referral based?
This is a great way to find out the firm’s reputation in the area. Renovation firms with high levels of repeat or referral-based business have worked hard to establish great relationships with their clients and the communities they serve. At Blackline Renovations, we’re proud that more than 90% of our business comes from referrals and repeat clients and we can’t wait to work with you.
